After years of study and countless hours of trial and error manipulating my own catalog of images, I’ve finally arrived at a system of digital photo retouching with Photoshop techniques which will greatly improve the quality of any digital photograph. Poor shots can be sometimes be saved. Good shots can be great and great shots can make viewers say “wow, that’s a pro shot – I’d like to buy a print!”
But isn’t using Photoshop on a digital photograph cheating?
Before the advent of digital photography, film photographers such as Ansel Adams manipulated their final images using darkroom techniques such as “dodging” and “burning” to lighten or darken particular areas of a print. Additionally, processing chemicals on film caused different reactions which would give the print a different feeling. If you’re a purist, using a darkroom to make artistic prints, you’re not likely reading this website. You’re a digital photographer and you understand that a digital camera is like a lens over a scanner. The sensor captures the light reflectivity of objects and processes an image based on the digital values of those pixels. While today’s digital cameras do a remarkable job of rendering accurate pixels there is almost always a slight color cast to every digital photograph. The light that nature provides often high in contrast, hiding the details in shadows and “blowing out” the highlights. Using Photoshop on a digital image is like making artistic, creative and pleasing use of light in the darkroom to make the image more pleasing to the eye.
Enough theory, let’s look at some before and after shots using my photo retouching Photoshop techniques:
Here’s another before and after example of digital photo retouching with Photoshop:
(By the way, I won a magazine cover contest with that digital photo, not to brag but it’s true.)

I also use Photoshop to take an otherwise, somewhat boring photograph and make it into something resembling art. Take the next couple of examples – high contrast black and white (near infrared) and a sort of pop art style:
Photographs can be cropped and resized, enlarged for large posters and gallery framed with my Photoshop service:
