I’ve been noticing the adverts for Cindy Crawford’s Meaningful Beauty lately. They show before photos of women with lines and wrinkles on their face, then after applying Meaningful Beauty, they suddenly have wrinkle free, flawless skin – utterly amazing. Well, I’ve got a face cream full of proteins and amino acids for you that will reduce lines and wrinkles and it’s totally free. Come on over and I’ll show you – lol. Ok so I’m just kidding about the face cream. The miracle of Meaningful Beauty, Oil of Olay, Skin So Soft and J-Lo’s haughty face cream, as far as the advertising is concerned is in Photoshop. Ok really girls, a face cream is a face cream is a face cream and they all moisturize the skin which helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and gives the skin a healthy glow but the adverts are trying to sell you a fountain of youth – something which doesn’t exist. Just look at this example:

Before magic face cream

After application of magic face cream

You can see how well my magic face cream really works – look at what a huge difference it makes. I should be making a ton from this stuff! Let’s call it liquid photoshop. Â Reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, smooth the skin and voila! Â Are we really falling for these advertisements for age reducing face creams?

Yesterday I was opening my email and was presented with an offering from Google – Google Buzz . Â I hardly ever turn down a google offering so I followed and well, it looks like Google’s really stepping up against Facebook. Â I already had followers and so of course, I followed them – reciprocity and all. Â The question I have about this is what is the reach of the comments I post. Â It says “public” so I’m just wondering if it’s going into Google Real Time search ie. twitter comments, etc. Â Frankly, Facebook keeps changing its settings so frequently, I can see where Google would easily convert the gmail users but I wonder about the non-gmail users. Â Will they join?

Man, it’s hard to keep up with Google these days – once this integrates with the site feature stuff they recently implemented, it’s going to explode and Google will be the biggest cyber business in the universe. Â Hold on to your data!

I’m sure you’ve heard the reference of someone as a lazy bum. Â I’ve personally always thought it was over-kill. Â The definition of a bum is as follows:

Bum (n.):

1. A tramp; a vagrant.

2. A lazy or shiftless person, especially one who seeks to live solely by the support of others.

3. An incompetent, insignificant, or obnoxious person

You can see from the definition that lazy is really unnecessary – kind of like cash money. Â But today it occurred to me the difference between a bum and a lazy bum: A lazy bum doesn’t lift a cheek to fart.

I live within a stone’s throw of the Denny’s at 4th Street and the I-90. When the fog is settled in, about the only thing I can count on seeing is the bright yellow Denny’s sign like a beacon for bacon and sausage and pancakes..and today until 2 at the Denny’s in Coeur d’Alene the Grand Slam is totally free! I was sitting here thinking how hungry I was when I got an email from someone asking if I had gotten my free breakfast? Free Breakfast??? Where? DENNY’S, holy crap, I can walk there so I did. I had about a 5 minute wait for a counter space and the place is packed with happy Coeur d’Alenians and the Grand Slams are being slung about faster than you can say, can I have some more syrup please? Susan and I have eaten there several times and remarked that it’s never busy – well that’s certainly not the case today. There may be no such thing as a free lunch, but there’s a free breakfast. Thanks Denny’s – you rock! You can get your free Grand Slam at Denny’s in CdA until 2:00pm today!

Today was another fog filled day – the dog wanted her walk early and I stood on the bridge over I-90 over Coeur d’Alene, the visibility about 100 ft and I felt isolated. Â The day before, I spent in Bayview and for whatever reason, I was socially awkward, a weird form of shyness I sometimes experience that’s often misinterpreted as arrogance. Â I made a sales call which I failed to close – or at least left me with the feeling of uncertainty. Â So I replayed the scenario, what can I do to close better? Â I kicked myself around for some time, knowing I basically just had my brain picked for an hour and this is something I’ve done over and over again. Â A friend reminded me I am the one with the keys to the castle. Â Nobody works for free. Â Combine this with the fact that my wife is thousands of miles away, I had a blow-out argument with a family member, and I’m just generally disgruntled and the feeling of disconnected swelled into near despair. Â Of course, turning to the internet furthers my disconnect from reality. Â I’m disconnected from my blog – I’m disconnected from my art and most of all, it just hurts to write but my friend asks me, “are you going to write that article for me?” Â ”Yes, tomorrow – today was a rough day dude.” Â This morning as I pour my energy into crafting an article for his blog, I’m wondering why I bother – I don’t put this much energy into my own writing or at least I haven’t in some time. Â Many years ago, I was swirling in the throes of a deep depression. Â Life was just not working out as I thought it should. Â This, I’ve learned is the essence, the trigger, of depression for me. Â And something miraculous happened. Â I was staring at the computer at my desk in a dead end job and I was inspired – that’s not really even what it was – it was more like voices were talking to me and I started typing. Â I was just typing what the voices were saying and when I stopped typing and read it, it was a poem. Â It was raw and intense and you know what, it made me feel better. Â It made me feel so much better that I started to tune in to these voices and I typed what they were saying. Â A year later and hundreds of poems and short stories, thousands of words later, the dark clouds lifted and I broke through a major depression. Â I stopped writing creatively as soon as it broke. Â I stopped just as suddenly as I had started. Â For the last 20 years or more, I have written professionally every day but the creative writing was purely cathartic – a free form of therapy.

As the fog lifts over Coeur d’Alene, I feel less disconnected, isolated and depressed. Â Although the weather is only a part of my overall affectation, I feel better having put this down. Â Maybe I’ll turn off the computer and head back into society for a spell. Â There was a game of Apples to Apples going on at the Floating Patio and I sure would like to have gotten invited to play – but you know, I could have asked. Â And I walked right past my friend sitting at the end of the bar, wrapped up in my mind, creating my own isolation amidst a crowd. Â And the ray of sun streaming through the patio door is reminding me that I alone have control of my emotions. Â And I’m choosing to leave isolated and disconnected behind so I bid you good day and am signing off. Â The only communication with me today is if you see me face to face.

Man, I’d love to be a fly on the wall when someone sits at their computer and decides to randomly search Google. Â This post was inspired by looking at some site stats and noticing the very random searches that have led people to this site. Â Most notorious in my mind is the latest search results for “really big poop.” Â It just so happens that I happen to have a picture of a really big bear poop on this site as I was working maintenance at Farragut State Park in North Idaho and had to clean up after the bears every day last fall so hopefully I helped the searcher for really big poop.

I could ask myself why anyone would want to search for such a thing but I know for every topic that exists in the world, there’s somebody searching for it. Â The thing that gets me is the Google data mining aspect – that they keep records of every single search. Â Think about this – it’s as if they are mapping human minds – a giant social project that someday could explain the inner workings of human thought. Â What conclusions could someone draw about you if they had detailed data of everything you’ve ever searched for on Google – in addition to an analysis of everywhere you’ve ever been on the internet? Â Would it be something you’d like to know if you were trying to sell a product – you bet it would – and my guess is we haven’t even seen the tip of the iceberg yet on how Google will profit from this data. Â It will be shock and awe.

Just a humble prediction, what’s your thoughts?

You might have noticed my assistant, Otto has been doing most of the writing lately. Â Otto has been busy pulling the best content from Amazon while I’ve been out searching the internet for answers to less than philosophical questions such as “how can I increase my Google page ranking?” Â ”how can I get more comments on my blog?” Â ”how can I get a community of readers?” Â Well, I’ve been very busy answering these questions and launching new sites and retouching photos for clients and learning new tricks in Adobe Fireworks and trying some things in Flash and everything else. Â I learned a few things and now I’m thinking a change might occur in how I go about this blogging endeavor. Â Here’s my to do list:

Fire Otto – he’s a great guy but hey, everyone knows the deal with an autopilot – nobody’s flying the plane

Get out there and comment more. Â I actually read the articles and leave intelligent comments (because I can) and they’re bringing new readers here.

To encourage new readers and comments I have installed the dofollow plugin so they get credit for their link, I further installed KeywordLuv so they can use comments to anchor text their link, and went a step further and joined CommentLuv so their last blog post will show up under their name. Â The only thing I didn’t do was write a comment for them.

The to-do list also includes, cleaning up the categories, building anchor text links in archives, editing old blog posts and directory submissions. Â Not much fun but hey, if I don’t do it, nothing will change.

I had no idea when I started this blog what the nofollow attribute even was or why it was important until I started checking back links to the site. Â Like many other bloggers, I thought if I set out into the blogosphere, read other blogs and make insightful and useful comments that I’d get a back link which would help my page ranking with search engines. Â I was wrong and I had no idea just how wrong I was until I started reading about the nofollow tag.

I first learned about the nofollow attribute when I checked my strategy of signing up and submitting  internet articles to various sites such as eHow, associated content and similar sites.  In the profile pages of these sites, they let you put your blog url and you can even put your url in the article itself.  One right-click, view page source and i’m looking at a tag right before my url that says “nofollow”.  Hmmm – quick google search and there’s a lengthy discussion of the implementation of a nofollow attribute, intended to discourage spam comments.  Apparently it’s other suggested use by Google is when users submit links, to avoid association with “unknown” content, the nofollow tag is encouraged.  So basically, my efforts of trying to get some page rank by submitting content to third party sites was nil.

Bloggers have been told repeatedly that making comments on other blogs is a sound strategy for receiving page rank by back links but the nofollow tag essentially removes any page ranking criteria from the link. Â Google states that the bots don’t follow the tags and apparently Yahoo disregards the tag although there’s only one search engine that I care about and that’s Google. Â The traffic from other engines pales in comparison so the campaign of back linking by comment is worthless if the blog in question uses the default setting of nofollow for comments (ie WordPress).

Let’s talk a little about comment spam – I hate it and so does everyone else but the fact of the matter is that Askimet does a great job of catching it. Â Since I started this blog, Askimet has caught 1,902 spam comments and I have 5,53 in my spam que. Â There are no spam comments on my site unless I intentionally let them in and frankly, I’m not bothered by this issue. Â According to WordPress, the nofollow attribute did nothing to stop comment spam (yet has continued to leave nofollow as the default setting.)

What I have done about this nofollow issue

Since I was completely unaware that the nofollow comment attribute was on my site I disabled it. Â I believe that if you leave a comment on this site you should have a back link. Â That’s the way I want it on sites I comment on. Â Comments are useful in many ways – they’re user contributed content that can help by adding keywords and help to make a site feel more like a community than a one-sided conversation. Â So I installed a WordPress Plugin called Dofollow. Â A moment later, the “evil nofollow attribute from your comments” is removed. Â Will this result in more spam comments – I don’t really care since the Askimet plugin is catching them anyway.

About Comment Etiquette

When I go to a blog and make a comment, I actually read the post and try to add something intelligent to the mix. Â A comment like “Great Article!” Â isn’t really a comment, is it? Â Yes it may take a few more minutes to actually read and say something useful but those kinds of comments are more likely to be clicked on by other readers than an obvious spam comment for the sole purpose of back linking. Â The other thing in comment etiquette that you shouldn’t use your url in the name field – a) Askimet flags that as spam so I have to override it and b) you’re already getting a link, no need to be greedy. Â I sometimes let these through but I’m just going to let Askimet kill them from now on.

With that said, please feel free to comment and get a back link that might actually contribute to your overall page ranking since the nofollow tag is gone here.

I have been in the freelance business for several years now. Â I’m a freelance writer, photographer, photoshop pro, junk trader and basically an all around jack of all trades. Â I worked in the traditional job market for several years and all the while thought I could make the profit for myself that my work landed my employer. Â There are some rewarding things about freelancing – you set your own work hours, you work when you want to and on what you want to, there’s no cubicle, and you’re your own boss. Â Then there’s the downside: Â you have to constantly hustle new business. Â While you’re drumming up new business, you have to do the work you lined up. Â Your boss is now a client. Â Your work hours just doubled and then there’s the feast and famine issue. Â Sometimes you have lots of work – other times you have no work. Â Money becomes a constant issue and sometimes a regular paycheck seems like it would be a dream.

What do people think when you tell them you’re a freelance writer? Â Well, typically freelance anything equals unemployed. Â But I have this great portfolio of my work and references from happy clients. Â The market for freelance anything is fiercely competitive. Â With so many millions of people unemployed today, don’t you think they’re thinking the same as you – well, hey, I can freelance. Â A flood of talent on the market that was otherwise gainfully employed equals a falling rate of pay for freelance work. Â How cheap are you willing to sell your stuff for? Â Especially if the guy starving next door is willing to undercut you.

Today I woke up and had to look at a calendar to know what day of the week it is because in my freelance world, there’s no difference between Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Â I sit in front of the computer for ten or more hours every day trying to make my daily funds necessary to keep from getting a regular job. Â This amount of computer time has some weary effects like the beginning of carpal tunnel. Â I have back, neck and shoulder pains constantly from the interface with a keyboard. Â It’s just a hazard of the business and of course, there’s no health insurance unless you’re willing to fork out the funds for your own private insurance.

Now hey, I’m not trying to stop anyone from realizing their dreams of being their own boss. Â I love it (most of the time) until tax time comes around then there’s a whole separate problem that comes from getting 1099’s like self employment tax and other considerations of self employment.

In looking at freelancing in general I think the absolute best freelance job is as an expert witness.  During my time as a lawyer, I saw these guys and gals who had the credentials to call themselves an expert at something and frankly, they could make enough money freelancing to make the hassles worthwhile.  For instance, they would take a retainer of  $2,000 to $5,000 just to begin a case which typically would involve reviewing the file and making an initial report.  Then they could command $200 an hour for deposition testimony and up to $500 an hour for trial testimony.  Who could be an expert witness?  Anyone who has significant experience (10-20 years) in a field with advanced education and professional associations could call themselves an expert witness.  Becoming an expert witness could be a great way to transition out of a long career and not get complete boredom during retirement.  Expert witnesses can pick and choose the cases they want – they can turn down cases they don’t like and they can basically charge outrageous fees with very little, if any legal exposure to themselves personally.  This I think is a freelance business that makes sense.

I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the past, specifically the little blog I used to run called the Notorious B.L.O.G. It was a joke at the time and yes, I was the original, I owned the domain name notoriousblog.com which has now become a parking page siphoning off web traffic that I built over several years of blogging back in the day when the internet seemed to have much more breathing space. Â I started the blog as a place for me to rant and vent and express myself creatively as I felt stifled in my profession as a lawyer. Â I stole away precious moments from various employers to post some really outrageous material and I was prolific. Â It wasn’t uncommon for me to make three to five posts a day. Â Well, it didn’t take very long for notoriousblog to start generating traffic. Â I was amazed at the weird search terms people would use to land on the blog – after a couple of years it had over 1 million visits and the funny thing is I never had a single ad on the page. Â It was linked to hundreds of blogrolls and just kept picking up steam and I never once thought about monetizing that site. Â It was a hobby, I guess is the best way to describe it. Â I made a great living at the time and tried to keep the blog separate from my profession. Â One day, I got an email from a client (from his Treo) asking me if I was notoriousblog. Â Holy shit, I couldn’t deny it and this was a big client, an SEC case and it was primarily responsible for me earning a salary so I hastily disabled the site, let the domain lapse and walked away from five years of archives and massive web traffic. Â Had I known then what I know now, I would have quit that job right then and sold notoriousblog instead. Â I didn’t even last another two years as a lawyer before I quit that and my blogs have paled in comparison ever since. Â Now, I’m not about regrets – hey, I did what I did and I’m ok with it but there’s something about the fact that it woke me up this morning, years after the fact that has me thinking. Â The subconscious mind is sneaky in what it brings up from the past to (I guess) help you navigate the future. Â I don’t think the fact that I had and lost something was what woke me up as much as the idea behind what I had done. Â There was something pure about it in its intent. Â Something that is incalculable in google searches and page ranking and all such bullshit – it was honest and there’s something attractive about that at any time in this world. Â That’s what I think I’ve been missing – we can talk about transparency or whatever – it’s not even that, I guess it’s just that most of what I see on the internet today is just about entirely devoid of anything real whatsoever. Â Sure, there’s real this and real that and occasionally you actually find what you’re looking for but to me, everything seems calculated to get into your wallet. Â I’m not sure if that was what my subconscious mind was really trying to tell me or if it was just to remind me that the notoriousblog tagline was “just typing”. Â A roommate of mine had installed Photoshop 7.o on an old machine of mine and I took a photo of an antique typewriter for the header which I struggled to figure out how to make that header look good with my movable type template (which was a real bitch to work with, let me tell you and say some thanks to WordPress for making blogging much easier). Â All along, all of it has been just typing.
