Out and about in the blogosphere and saw this interesting concept about taking web content in the public domain, images or whatever and remixing them or as the site described, shapeshift it into a new form and profiting from it. Â I’ve also noticed that there are now ebooks being sold about profiting from the public domain as if anyone really needed this. Â A remix was made of the old sitting bull photo which was posted as a public domain image – whether it’s actually in the public domain or not is not something I’m personally aware of although I’m willing to take their word for it. Â You’d have to check for yourself – I’m using it under the concept of “fair use,” as I’m actually posting a review of another site here.

I happened across some dude’s blog and the question was could you solve this ghost photo. There was a lot of speculation about how this is done and I’m going to show you just how easy it is to make one of these ghost photos in Photoshop. Here was the photograph in question:Â

alleged ghost picture

Â

To demonstrate this photoshop job, I quickly cloned out the ghost here:Â

Ghost cloned out of photo

Next, find the source of the ghost and this ghost came from an urban legends post that had gone around the internet some time before. Here is the photo the ghost was lifted from:

Here’s the photoshop steps:
1. Open the photo without the ghost in Photoshop then open the photo of the urban legends ghost.

2. Using the lasso tool, make a quick selection around the urban legend ghost.
3. Grab the move tool from the palate and move the selection into the window. Control-T to use free transform and size the ghost into the window.
4. Set the blend mode of the layer to soft light. It appears that the blend mode was left at normal in the original photoshop job but I think soft light works better to blend the selection.
Here’s the final image:

Ghost photoshopped in window

Update from the blogosphere about whether it is possible to be happy? – This, enlightenment from Guru Jeffster:

Happiness on the other hand, a version of a love based emotion is as easily sparked with thinking happy thoughts.  We play little movies in our head and those movies create an emotional state.  Do we have the choice of what movies play in our head?  Yes – you can choose to change the picture.  Tired of thinking about something that’s bothering you, change the channel.  If the idea of puppies licking your face would make you feel happy, think that.  It’s surprisingly easy to say yet people still choose anger.  Borrowed the article Anger is a Choice.

For some weird reason, everybody is asking “is it possible to be happy?” Â Well yes, after giving the question of whether it is possible to be happy, I’d have to say yes – it’s possible but it’s difficult. Â Well it’s not really even difficult to be happy – that’s just a matter of thinking happy thoughts. Â But to have a happy life and doing what you want can be difficult because not everybody is as interested in your happiness as you are. Â It’ interesting that “is it possible to be happy?” is the hottest google trend today and makes me wonder whether anyone really cares about being happy or just getting a bunch of traffic to their blog. Â Well the fact of the matter is that getting a bunch of traffic to my blog would make me extremely happy. Â So to answer the question “is it possible to be happy?” – yes, by jumping on the is it possible to be happy bandwagon I hope to get happy.

Yesterday I was opening my email and was presented with an offering from Google – Google Buzz . Â I hardly ever turn down a google offering so I followed and well, it looks like Google’s really stepping up against Facebook. Â I already had followers and so of course, I followed them – reciprocity and all. Â The question I have about this is what is the reach of the comments I post. Â It says “public” so I’m just wondering if it’s going into Google Real Time search ie. twitter comments, etc. Â Frankly, Facebook keeps changing its settings so frequently, I can see where Google would easily convert the gmail users but I wonder about the non-gmail users. Â Will they join?

Man, it’s hard to keep up with Google these days – once this integrates with the site feature stuff they recently implemented, it’s going to explode and Google will be the biggest cyber business in the universe. Â Hold on to your data!

Occasionally I run into an ethical dilemma with my blog. Today, I was looking on craigslist spokane for a creative gig, cause that’s what I do and I encountered another work for portfolio ad – believe me, these are common and I guess I’ve just had it up to my eyeballs with working for free so I teed off. I posted a reply on craigslist, posted a rather scathing article on my blog naming the company and waited. While I waited, Scott picked up what I was putting down and ran with it on his blog, then I got a comment and admittedly, I was surprised but ran with that as well. Â By the time it was said and done, Scott and I had probably used the company name enough to out rank them in a Google search – which could be devastating to a small business. Â A few hours later I received a sincere apology – another surprise and then the totality of the circumstances became apparent. Â The craigslist ad was removed and I had won, but at what expense? Â I want no harm to come to anyone by my blog – that’s not why I do this. Â I do this to promote my writing and photography and web design. Â So I had to consider the “ethics” of blogging – if content can be harmful to someone should it be left alone? Â I wondered what would a journalist do in this situation. Â I still don’t know the answer to this. Â I considered removing the identifying information and publishing the apology to finish the story then it occurred to me that the only ethics I had to go by in this situation was my gut and my gut told me to take it down. Â I’m not after a reputation as someone who attacks people. Â I’m just a humble freelancer, trying to eek out a living in a difficult profession. Â It’s very interesting that we always have the chance to re-evaluate our positions and make the right decisions. Â For this, I am very happy of the outcome and hope our public discussion didn’t reach his customers.

Man, I’d love to be a fly on the wall when someone sits at their computer and decides to randomly search Google. Â This post was inspired by looking at some site stats and noticing the very random searches that have led people to this site. Â Most notorious in my mind is the latest search results for “really big poop.” Â It just so happens that I happen to have a picture of a really big bear poop on this site as I was working maintenance at Farragut State Park in North Idaho and had to clean up after the bears every day last fall so hopefully I helped the searcher for really big poop.

I could ask myself why anyone would want to search for such a thing but I know for every topic that exists in the world, there’s somebody searching for it. Â The thing that gets me is the Google data mining aspect – that they keep records of every single search. Â Think about this – it’s as if they are mapping human minds – a giant social project that someday could explain the inner workings of human thought. Â What conclusions could someone draw about you if they had detailed data of everything you’ve ever searched for on Google – in addition to an analysis of everywhere you’ve ever been on the internet? Â Would it be something you’d like to know if you were trying to sell a product – you bet it would – and my guess is we haven’t even seen the tip of the iceberg yet on how Google will profit from this data. Â It will be shock and awe.

Just a humble prediction, what’s your thoughts?

I had no idea when I started this blog what the nofollow attribute even was or why it was important until I started checking back links to the site. Â Like many other bloggers, I thought if I set out into the blogosphere, read other blogs and make insightful and useful comments that I’d get a back link which would help my page ranking with search engines. Â I was wrong and I had no idea just how wrong I was until I started reading about the nofollow tag.

I first learned about the nofollow attribute when I checked my strategy of signing up and submitting  internet articles to various sites such as eHow, associated content and similar sites.  In the profile pages of these sites, they let you put your blog url and you can even put your url in the article itself.  One right-click, view page source and i’m looking at a tag right before my url that says “nofollow”.  Hmmm – quick google search and there’s a lengthy discussion of the implementation of a nofollow attribute, intended to discourage spam comments.  Apparently it’s other suggested use by Google is when users submit links, to avoid association with “unknown” content, the nofollow tag is encouraged.  So basically, my efforts of trying to get some page rank by submitting content to third party sites was nil.

Bloggers have been told repeatedly that making comments on other blogs is a sound strategy for receiving page rank by back links but the nofollow tag essentially removes any page ranking criteria from the link. Â Google states that the bots don’t follow the tags and apparently Yahoo disregards the tag although there’s only one search engine that I care about and that’s Google. Â The traffic from other engines pales in comparison so the campaign of back linking by comment is worthless if the blog in question uses the default setting of nofollow for comments (ie WordPress).

Let’s talk a little about comment spam – I hate it and so does everyone else but the fact of the matter is that Askimet does a great job of catching it. Â Since I started this blog, Askimet has caught 1,902 spam comments and I have 5,53 in my spam que. Â There are no spam comments on my site unless I intentionally let them in and frankly, I’m not bothered by this issue. Â According to WordPress, the nofollow attribute did nothing to stop comment spam (yet has continued to leave nofollow as the default setting.)

What I have done about this nofollow issue

Since I was completely unaware that the nofollow comment attribute was on my site I disabled it. Â I believe that if you leave a comment on this site you should have a back link. Â That’s the way I want it on sites I comment on. Â Comments are useful in many ways – they’re user contributed content that can help by adding keywords and help to make a site feel more like a community than a one-sided conversation. Â So I installed a WordPress Plugin called Dofollow. Â A moment later, the “evil nofollow attribute from your comments” is removed. Â Will this result in more spam comments – I don’t really care since the Askimet plugin is catching them anyway.

About Comment Etiquette

When I go to a blog and make a comment, I actually read the post and try to add something intelligent to the mix. Â A comment like “Great Article!” Â isn’t really a comment, is it? Â Yes it may take a few more minutes to actually read and say something useful but those kinds of comments are more likely to be clicked on by other readers than an obvious spam comment for the sole purpose of back linking. Â The other thing in comment etiquette that you shouldn’t use your url in the name field – a) Askimet flags that as spam so I have to override it and b) you’re already getting a link, no need to be greedy. Â I sometimes let these through but I’m just going to let Askimet kill them from now on.

With that said, please feel free to comment and get a back link that might actually contribute to your overall page ranking since the nofollow tag is gone here.

What’s the value of a well written internet article? Â You might be surprised – read on to discover how a ghostwritten keyword rich article paid for itself and produced a profit in one month.

You might be wondering if you should purchase a professionally ghostwritten article for your website or blog. Â You’ve probably heard that a well written internet article will help you to drive traffic to the keywords of the article. Â I ghostwrite articles for clients, giving them custom, keyword rich content for their websites. Â It’s not particularly lucrative for me but it helps to pay the bills so I’m willing to do it. Â But this isn’t about me – this is a success story a client relayed to me about an article I had ghostwritten for his blog. Â Since I maintain strict confidentiality regarding content I ghostwrite, I can’t tell you what the article was about or where it is on the internet. Â What I can tell you is that I charged 3 cents per word for a 1000 word article and the client was happy and quickly paid. Â A month later, I received an email from the client that the article was ranking high and someone emailed him wanting to purchase a link in the article. Â He sold that link for $30. Â One month after purchasing the article he had made his money back and profited by ad clicks generated by the article which will continue in the future.

Let’s look at this a little closer. Â Why would someone want a link to an internet article? Â Well, in this case, the article ranks high in Google and has some keywords which are commonly searched. Â The person purchasing this link is hoping to siphon some of that traffic to his site where he’s selling a related product and he’s gaining higher relevancy for his site by a natural text link to his site in a relevant category. Â It’s a win-win for the site with the high ranking article and a win for the linked-in site.

I’m happy for the client’s success with the article ghostwritten by me. Â It virtually ensures continued business.

I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the past, specifically the little blog I used to run called the Notorious B.L.O.G. It was a joke at the time and yes, I was the original, I owned the domain name notoriousblog.com which has now become a parking page siphoning off web traffic that I built over several years of blogging back in the day when the internet seemed to have much more breathing space. Â I started the blog as a place for me to rant and vent and express myself creatively as I felt stifled in my profession as a lawyer. Â I stole away precious moments from various employers to post some really outrageous material and I was prolific. Â It wasn’t uncommon for me to make three to five posts a day. Â Well, it didn’t take very long for notoriousblog to start generating traffic. Â I was amazed at the weird search terms people would use to land on the blog – after a couple of years it had over 1 million visits and the funny thing is I never had a single ad on the page. Â It was linked to hundreds of blogrolls and just kept picking up steam and I never once thought about monetizing that site. Â It was a hobby, I guess is the best way to describe it. Â I made a great living at the time and tried to keep the blog separate from my profession. Â One day, I got an email from a client (from his Treo) asking me if I was notoriousblog. Â Holy shit, I couldn’t deny it and this was a big client, an SEC case and it was primarily responsible for me earning a salary so I hastily disabled the site, let the domain lapse and walked away from five years of archives and massive web traffic. Â Had I known then what I know now, I would have quit that job right then and sold notoriousblog instead. Â I didn’t even last another two years as a lawyer before I quit that and my blogs have paled in comparison ever since. Â Now, I’m not about regrets – hey, I did what I did and I’m ok with it but there’s something about the fact that it woke me up this morning, years after the fact that has me thinking. Â The subconscious mind is sneaky in what it brings up from the past to (I guess) help you navigate the future. Â I don’t think the fact that I had and lost something was what woke me up as much as the idea behind what I had done. Â There was something pure about it in its intent. Â Something that is incalculable in google searches and page ranking and all such bullshit – it was honest and there’s something attractive about that at any time in this world. Â That’s what I think I’ve been missing – we can talk about transparency or whatever – it’s not even that, I guess it’s just that most of what I see on the internet today is just about entirely devoid of anything real whatsoever. Â Sure, there’s real this and real that and occasionally you actually find what you’re looking for but to me, everything seems calculated to get into your wallet. Â I’m not sure if that was what my subconscious mind was really trying to tell me or if it was just to remind me that the notoriousblog tagline was “just typing”. Â A roommate of mine had installed Photoshop 7.o on an old machine of mine and I took a photo of an antique typewriter for the header which I struggled to figure out how to make that header look good with my movable type template (which was a real bitch to work with, let me tell you and say some thanks to WordPress for making blogging much easier). Â All along, all of it has been just typing.
