Who is Dirk McFergus?
This was the copy I used on the now defunct, Dirk McFergus website to promote my book:
Dirk is a writer, spiritual guide and entrepreneur of American origin living in Mexico. He’s an enigma wrapped in a riddle, coated in paradox. He is the author of “From Garage Sale to Financial Freedom in Five Steps,” available on Amazon.com. In between surfing, selling second hand merchandise, writing books, taking photographs, he’s willing to answer your questions. You can ask Dirk anything about anything. There’s no guarantee that you will like the answer. You get bonus points for asking about his book but nothing is off limits. Submit your questions directly to Dirk at dirkmcfergus@gmail.com. What have you got to lose? It’s free to ask.
Here’s the truth:
Dirk McFergus was an idea based upon the life we were living in Las Vegas engaged in the storage unit auction business. We never did actually live in Mexico but we spent a lot of time with a friend living in Playas de Tijuana; our car was totaled south of Ensenada by a drunk driver; we were nearly hit by a boat falling off a trailer near Rosarito; we made several trips over the border smuggling used consumer goods; we set up shop on the beach in Playas and held several garage sales in Mexico. We wanted to move to Mexico and I just projected that to Dirk. The things I said in the book, my thoughts on consumerism and a philosophy of work, were true then and are still true today. For a variety of reasons at the time, I didn’t want to use my own name. Maybe I was holding open an imaginary escape hatch. Dirk was the name we had given a car we “bought” on payments from a neighbor and eventually had to give back to avoid litigation. McFergus is simply the combination of our last names.
In one sense, using a pen name frees you to say things you might not say if you were concerned with how you might appear professionally. Since I am no longer bound by any such consideration I am free to say, Jeff is Dirk – Dirk was Jeff.
I’ll still answer any question from a reader.
