Eagle Watching at Lake Coeur d’Alene

American Bald Eagle at Lake Coeur d'Alene

Nature lovers of the Inland Northwest, the American bald eagles have landed at Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Photographers, bird watchers and curious spectators were braving the cold today to witness the majestic splendor of the national bird, the American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus) at Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.  Every year, the birds migrate for a couple of weeks to get their fill of kokanee salmon.

At the Coeur d’Alene Parkway, an Idaho Parks and Recreation, day use area.  Photographers and spectators observed the bald eagles perching atop pines, soaring through the crisp air, circling their prey and quickly snatching the fish in their talons.  Although the day was overcast and the forecast is calling for snow in the coming days, a Park Ranger speculated that the birds would be here for another week or two.  The park had fires, cookies and hot chocolate for onlookers.  There are binders of photographs available for viewing as well as scopes set up to view the perching eagles.  If you’re looking for a nice way to spend some time, the Lake Coeur d’Alene Parkway is a fantastic spot to do it in.  I managed to get a few shots and although I would liked to have had a 400mm zoom, my 200mm lens caught some of the action.  Here are some images from my camera:

    Hello Jeff and Susan,

I came across the name Dirk McFergus in my phone. Listed for the number was 2222. Hmmm…. It took some time but I began to recall a dreamy like conversation in the backyard at some friends house in Vegas last March. Most of my conversation there, particularly 30 minutes after arriving, were somewhat dreamy. To many Newcastle’s with “pants”. Anyway, I remembered what this name was about and quickly logged into Amazon. I found and ordered your book and subsequently found this web site. Glad to here you guys got out of Vegas. It sounds like you found a great place to hold up for a while. I bet the country is beautiful around you I’m sure the spring time will be fantastic. I don’t miss Vegas proper at all. I do miss our mutual friends and particularly the country. We are here in Oklahoma 25 miles from the nearest town and ½ mile from the nearest neighbor. I like the solitude but I miss the mountains outside of Vegas A LOT. All is good though, we will be starting the seedlings for our vegetable garden soon and we are also raising our own beef and chickens and 2 donkeys(not for consumption). We should be getting 80-90% of our food from what we have grown or raised by this spring. We have plans to become more self sufficient (energy) in the future but money is always an issue and there is little of it here. Mandy is working as a secretary at a small school not far from our farm and I’m doing odd jobs and selling all the toys I collected in Vegas on EBay. I will probably end up going back to teaching but if at all possible I would like to find something else. I just don’t know if the economy around her will support our plans for an organic farm. In this part of the country organic is kind of a dirty word and it’s not in high demand. Most families have some type of garden or know someone who does so fresh Vegas aren’t to hard to find. We will set up a booth at the local farmers market and see how it goes. We have a lot of work cut out for us but if we can figure out how to make a little money from it we can’t imagine anything we’d rather do. I’ve enjoyed going through your web site and I hope I can implement some of the great ideas you guys have. We appreciate what you and Susan are doing. I look forward to reading your book and I hope things are going well for you both. Mandy said to say Hi to Susan.
    Regards,
    John
